TikTok Ghost Filter
A grinning grey ghost over someone's shoulder, then the scream when they see the screen.
Search "ghost filter" and you want the kuntilanak-behind effect: film a friend, flip the phone, catch the reaction.

What it is
The ghost filter (CSI even spells it "ghost fillter") is TikTok's "kuntilanak behind" effect by @ellanurfasa: a hunched grey figure with long stringy hair, huge white eyes, and a too-wide grin that sits over someone's shoulder on your phone screen. You point the camera at a friend, record, then turn the screen so they see her for the first time. Their face is the video.
A kuntilanak is a long-haired female ghost from Indonesian folklore. By mid-October 2026 the effect had roughly a million uses on TikTok. The wave started in South Africa around 22–23 September 2026, then jumped into US feeds in early October under #ghostfilter, #ghostprank, and #ghostsfiltereffect. Halloween timing did the rest. Creator Search Insights logged "ghost fillter" as a hot search because people keep mistyping "filter" while hunting the effect name.
Do not search only "ghost" in Effects. That dump is full of unrelated looks. Type "kuntilanak behind." CapCut also has a template literally called "GHOST FILTER," but its preview is Ghostface in a doorway, which is a different gag. Snapchat has its own behind-you lenses too. For the viral grey grin, stick to the TikTok effect name.
Sound is built into the scare: an eerie sting or laugh when the ghost lands. Tutorials tell you to keep original audio. How-to Shorts walk the Effects search; kitchen and adult reaction clips ask "did you spot her?" before flipping the phone.
Three usable angles. Adult reaction pranks on friends who can laugh it off. Straight tutorials that show the Effects search so people stop asking which filter it is. Spot-the-ghost posts where the overlay is already in frame and the joke is whether the viewer sees her.
Hard no: do not run this on young kids, lock them in a room, or film panic for views. The biggest October clips did exactly that and the comment sections called it cruel for a reason. Keep it to consenting adults.
How to try it
Format recipe: TikTok Create → Effects → search "kuntilanak behind" (not just "ghost"). Point the camera at a friend with space behind them, start recording so the ghost sits on their shoulder, then flip the screen and film their reaction. Keep original audio.
Angles: (1) adult reaction prank with the flip-screen beat, (2) Effects search tutorial for people typing "ghost fillter," (3) spot-the-ghost clip where the overlay is already visible and the caption asks if you saw her.
Audio cue: keep the effect's sting / laugh. That hit is half the scare. CapCut look-alikes also work if the preview shows the grey long-haired ghost, not Ghostface.
Hashtag / search pack: #ghostfilter #ghostprank #ghostsfiltereffect #kuntilanakbehind plus the CSI misspelling "ghost fillter" so searchers still land here. Caution: adults only. Do not scare children for content.

Common questions
- What is the TikTok ghost filter?
- It is the "kuntilanak behind" effect by @ellanurfasa: a grey long-haired grinning ghost that appears behind someone on your camera so you can film their reaction when they see the screen.
- What do I search in Effects?
- Search "kuntilanak behind." Searching only "ghost" returns a pile of unrelated filters. CSI shows the misspelling "ghost fillter" because that is what people type while hunting it.
- When did it take off?
- The current wave started in South Africa around 22–23 September 2026, hit US feeds in early October, and peaked in Creator Search Insights mid-month with Halloween approaching.
- Is CapCut's Ghost Filter the same thing?
- Often no. CapCut's popular "GHOST FILTER" template previews Ghostface in a doorway. For the viral grey grin, use TikTok's kuntilanak-behind effect or a CapCut template whose preview matches that ghost.
- What should you avoid?
- Do not use it on young kids, lock a door, or film panic for views. Keep the prank to consenting adults who will laugh afterward.
